Alberta’s Nursing Industry Votes in Favour of Strike
About 16,000 nursing care staff voted 98% in favor of strike over unresolved wage and safety issues after 18 months of stalled negotiations, union said.
- Between Oct. 30 and Nov. 3, AUPE announced that 98% of participating Alberta Health Services nursing care members voted to authorize strike action, with about 11,031 ballots cast.
- Faced with expanded duties and stagnant pay, AUPE says bargaining since March 2024 broke down in April, prompting the strike vote.
- About 16,000 unionized nursing care members could be affected, mediation is scheduled Thursday through Sunday, and the earliest strike notice is Nov. 17 with potential job action Nov. 20.
- AUPE says it would keep essential services while striking, warning a provincewide strike could worsen staffing amid a 10- to 12-per-cent vacancy rate, with Nenshi warning `Albertans would be justified in asking themselves if they are engineering yet another strike so that they can use the notwithstanding clause again`.
- The Alberta government says `This is a fair, competitive deal, in line with more than 87 other negotiated settlements across the public sector`, while estimating AUPE's proposal would cost more than $2 billion.
