AJK outlaws JAAC following protest call
The ban follows a protest call and a security push that includes 14,000 requested reinforcements and travel restrictions for visitors.
The Azad Jammu and Kashmir government proscribed the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee on Friday under anti-terrorism laws, effectively banning all associated nomenclatures ahead of the group's planned June 9 protest.
Following the ban, AJK Inspector General of Police Captain Liaquat Malik requested 14,000 additional law-enforcement personnel to maintain order during the planned protest, with deployment mandated for 15 days starting June 7.
Authorities claim the committee's demand to abolish 12 seats reserved for refugees in the AJK Legislative Assembly threatens democratic processes; officials noted 35 of 38 committee demands were already addressed through established constitutional forums.
The AJK government issued a travel advisory urging visitors to leave the region by Saturday evening, with the advisory remaining in force through June 20 to avoid inconvenience during the protest period.
Nomination filings for the July 27 general elections begin on June 9, coinciding with the planned protest; officials urged citizens to rely on democratic processes rather than street agitation to address constitutional matters.
