As Russian Drone Incursions Rattle Europe, Poland and Romania Deploy a New Defensive System
Since September, Russia has conducted nearly two dozen drone incursions and multiple airspace violations against NATO allies, testing defenses and escalating hybrid warfare tactics in Eastern Europe.
- Poland and Romania are deploying the American Merops system in recent months to defend against Russian drones, and Denmark has also decided to acquire it.
- In recent months, Europe’s NATO allies have reported nearly two dozen drones crossing into Poland in early September and three Russian military jets violating Estonia's airspace on 19 September, causing jet scrambles and airport closures.
- Brig. Gen. Thomas Lowin said the Merops system `basically flies drones against drones` and was chosen for its success in Ukraine, offering a cheaper alternative to multimillion-dollar jets scrambled against inexpensive drones.
- Merops is the first phase of a multi-year plan to build defenses over two to five years, aiming to deter Moscow with an Eastern Flank Deterrence Line, NATO officials said.
- Russian forces are mass-producing attack drones with advanced features, and extremely fast production cycles move them to battle within weeks, straining NATO’s resources and Western stocks of missiles.
