Air Pollution: Indian Capital Delhi's Air Quality Worsens Ahead of Diwali Festival
Authorities tightened vehicle and construction curbs as monitoring stations recorded 391, with several areas already in the severe range, officials said.
- Starting November 1, Delhi banned non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside the city to combat winter pollution. The restriction remains in effect until January 31, 2027, exempting electric and CNG vehicles.
- The Commission for Air Quality Management triggered the restrictions as Delhi's Air Quality Index surged from 117 on October 31 to 324 on Monday, citing "unfavourable meteorological conditions."
- On November 1, enforcement teams checked 14,930 vehicles and turned back more than 1,500 non-compliant ones. Authorities issued 566 challans for Pollution Under Control Certificate violations, imposing fines totalling Rs 56.6 lakh.
- Lawyer Gurmukh Dass Kohli challenged the ban in the Delhi High Court, arguing it creates "differential treatment" between Delhi-registered and outside-registered vehicles. The court deferred the matter to November 27.
- Vehicle restrictions complement broader anti-pollution measures, including construction bans and work-from-home mandates. Vehicles account for 23 per cent of winter pollution, though stubble burning and industrial emissions remain significant contributors.
