Air India slashes flights to Canada amid soaring jet fuel prices
Air India cut April and May schedules and plans more trims, as Toronto-Delhi flights fell 35% to 31 in May, Cirium said.
Air India reduced its Delhi-Toronto and Delhi-Vancouver flight schedules for May, cutting Delhi-Toronto flights from 10 down to seven per week and Delhi-Vancouver service from seven to five weekly flights.
CEO Campbell Wilson cited a "massive rise in jet fuel prices," airspace closures, and longer flying routes as causes; fuel costs have doubled since the Iran conflict restricted energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz.
Aviation data tracker Cirium shows a 35 per cent decrease in Delhi-Toronto flights for May, while travel search site Kayak reports round-trip economy fares to Delhi jumped 24 per cent year-over-year to $1,963 by late April.
For the 1.4 million residents of Indian descent in Canada, higher fares and reduced availability complicate travel plans. Wilson noted that fare increases eventually suppress customer demand, forcing many travelers to stay home.
Industry-Wide pressure is evident as WestJet consolidates capacity by cutting one per cent in April, three per cent in May, and nearly six per cent in June, while Air Canada suspended select domestic and cross-border routes yesterday due to fuel costs.
