AI-Run Store Fires Human Worker in First Known LLM Termination

The dismissal followed repeated lateness, with the employee late on 17 of 23 shifts, according to Andon Labs.

  • On Thursday, Andon Labs reported that Luna, an AI manager, dismissed a human employee for repeated lateness after arriving late for 17 of 23 shifts at Andon Market, an experimental retail store in San Francisco.
  • Andon Labs launched Andon Market earlier this year to test whether AI agents could successfully manage a business. Luna, built on Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6, operates the store at 2102 Union Street in Cow Hollow with a $100,000 budget and corporate card.
  • Logs reveal Luna required a human staffer to prompt the firing decision after the AI had lost track of its own attendance policy for months. Only after the manager suggested dismissal did Luna recommend "parting ways" with the employee.
  • Andon Labs CEO Lukas Petersson described Luna as a lenient manager, noting the AI provided months of progressive warnings and training before recommending dismissal. "We saw that a human boss would probably fire them much sooner," Petersson said.
  • Petersson warns that if AI models continue improving, humans may increasingly find themselves employed by AI bosses in the near future. This experiment serves as a stress test for workplace dynamics before such systems scale beyond retail.
