After 50 years the dangerous Oriental hornet returns to Croatia. Its sting can become life-threatening for tourists
The Oriental hornet has returned to Croatia after more than 50 years, with the first case discovered near Split, Croatian broadcaster Nova TV reported on Tuesday. Nests of the Oriental hornet were also discovered in Slovenia earlier this month. Experts warn that it causes damage to agriculture and is dangerous to human health.
In Croatia, experts have recorded the eastern hornet for the first time in more than fifty years. This is a species with a stronger venom than the common hornet and nests in the ground, where people can more easily come across it unknowingly. It also poses a danger to bees. In the Czech Republic, the eastern hornet does not occur at all, and experts are especially wary of the more aggressive Asian hornet.
The eastern horse hornet, which has not been recorded in Croatia since the 1970s, recently reappeared in a quarry in Kaštela near Split, Croatia Week wrote.
