Africa CDC calls an Ebola crisis summit as Nigeria records its first case
The outbreak has infected more than 9,500 people and killed nearly half, according to the World Health Organization.
African health ministers have been invited to an "extraordinary virtual meeting" on Oct. 28 to discuss Ebola's spread after Nigeria reported its first case on Tuesday, linked to a traveler from Uganda.
First detected in Congo in May, the outbreak has infected more than 9,500 people, making it the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak in history, according to the World Health Organization.
The rare Bundibugyo virus has no approved vaccine or treatment, while Nigerian authorities are tracing 44 contacts and Kenya has recorded nine cases linked to travelers from Uganda.
On Wednesday, The WHO advised countries in the region to sustain high readiness as the DRC outbreak evolves, with Kaseya urging "urgent action and political leadership at the highest level."
Despite Uganda's denial that Nigeria's case originated there, Ebola is now affecting three regions of Africa, and the disease has also reached France, complicating containment efforts.
