‘Kicked Out’: Hawks Respond to Tassie Exit
The league said the Tasmania Devils need room to become the state’s main team, ending Hawthorn’s 25-year home-game arrangement.
On Tuesday, the AFL confirmed Hawthorn will transition out of playing home matches in Tasmania after 2027, clearing the way for the Tasmania Devils to become the league's primary focus from the 2028 premiership season.
Spanning 25 years since 2001, the partnership was one Hawthorn lobbied to continue, arguing the two clubs could co-exist even after the Devils become the 19th team in 2028.
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell expressed disappointment, noting the club feels like it is 'being kicked out of a home' given their 76 per cent winning record and 11-match unbeaten streak at UTAS Stadium.
Seeking to mitigate financial impacts, club president Andy Gowers said Hawthorn will lobby the AFL to move Launceston games to the MCG, warning the removal will have material impact on the club's bottom line.
AFL chief operating officer Tom Harley said the Devils need space to thrive as the state's primary team, though fans remain divided on social media regarding their future support for football in Tasmania.
