MP Liisa Jaakonsaari (sd.) was one of the few Finns who managed to reach Afghanistan, which had just been occupied by the Soviet Union in 1980. Jaakonsaari, who later became known as an early supporter of NATO, represented the Peace Defenders in Kabul. Her interest in the status of women drove her on the trip.
