Ulrich Siegmund gives the approachable buddy, his AfD leads the surveys in Saxony-Anhalt. Behind the scenes, however, are far-right ideologists and conspiracy theorists.
The eyes of all of Europe are on Saxony-Anhalt, a small German state with just over two million inhabitants, which ranks last among Germany's 16 federal regions in terms of economic strength and life expectancy. DW reports that elections for the state parliament will be held there on Sunday, and the attention will be much wider than Magdeburg itself, the state capital. Ulrich Sigmund is said to be the reason.
Ulrich Siegmund presents himself as a friendly face of the AfD. At the same time, people with a far-right past are active in the party and faction in important places.
