Man sought in death of mother in Reading home

  • On Thursday, Reading police began searching for Ryan Hanafin, 22, as a person of interest after his mother, Andria Hanafin, was found fatally shot in their Central Avenue home early that morning.
  • After returning from a 12-hour shift, Matthew Hanafin discovered his wife's body at 12:38 a.m. Thursday and called 911, with their 13-year-old son home but remaining in his room.
  • Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan identified Ryan as a person of interest who may be "armed and dangerous," last seen driving a 2010 black Dodge Charger on Interstate 93 near Tewksbury around 7:25 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Police and animal control officers remain cordoned at the Center Street residence with crime tape. Authorities suspended Ryan's license to carry and are searching for both the suspect and the murder weapon.
  • District Attorney Ryan described the incident as "alleged to be domestic violence at this point, although not the traditional domestic violence situation," and urged residents to use "extreme caution." The family had no prior police history or documented mental health issues.
