Abbotsford teen driver nabbed going 85 km/h over speed limit in dad's Cadillac
The novice driver faces a $368 ticket, a seven-day impound and higher insurance costs after police said he was caught speeding in the same car again.
On October 13, an 18-year-old driver from Abbotsford was clocked at 175 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on Highway 1 near the Brunette Overpass in Coquitlam by the RCMP Air 1 helicopter.
Mounties confirmed this marks the second excessive speeding offense in one month; the driver had his father's black Cadillac impounded previously for the same violation.
Using the helicopter to track the Cadillac SUV, an unmarked Highway Patrol 'ghost car' intercepted the driver just west of 200th Street in Surrey after Air 1 alerted officers.
Facing $2,500 in total costs, including a $368 fine and a potential 30-day impound, the driver also faces an ICBC licence status review that could result in suspension.
Michael McLaughlin said Police released the video as a public-service message, stating officers use tools like helicopters to keep roads safer and deter dangerous driving.
