AANA Warns Proposed Student Loan Cap Would Put Nurse Anesthesia Education and Patient Care at Risk

The Education Department's $100,000 loan cap for nurse anesthesiology students risks reducing the anesthesia workforce, especially in rural areas where CRNAs provide most care, AANA said.

  • On Nov. 26, 2025, the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology warned the U.S. Department of Education's draft would cap loans for future Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists at $100,000.
  • Tied to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the ED draft definition of "professional degrees" would exclude nurse anesthesiology and subject student registered nurse anesthetists to a lower loan cap, the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology said this departs from Trump administration support.
  • Unlike physicians, CRNA students are often unpaid during clinical training and rely heavily on loans since CRNA programs receive no funding from the nearly $21 billion Graduate Medical Education pool.
  • Critical care nurses considering CRNA careers may be pushed away, the AANA said, while ED's draft allows physician anesthesia residents $200,000 in loans, risking reduced access for rural patients.
  • The ED's draft states that workforce growth is threatened by risking access to fair lending limits, citing 2,866 new CRNAs in 2024 versus 2,039 resident positions, according to AANA.
