A week ago, Jamie Melham was on top of the world. Now she’s been banned for a month

Jamie Melham received a one-month ban after stewards found she caused interference by allowing her horse to shift out during the Melbourne Cup carnival, officials said.

  • On Tuesday Racing Victoria stewards released a report banning Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Jamie Melham for 30 race meetings; she will be eligible to return on Thursday, December 18.
  • The stewards found Jamie Melham allowed Fancify to shift out near the 200m, causing interference to She's Got Pizzazz and dislodging jockey Blake Shinn in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes.
  • Blake Shinn was treated on the track and taken to hospital, where he broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg and underwent surgery, while a post-race veterinary examination found She's Got Pizzazz lame in the off-foreleg requiring veterinary clearance.
  • In assessing the penalty, Racing Victoria stewards said they took account of Jamie Melham, jockey's guilty plea and good riding record, and Melham can complete her Caulfield bookings on Saturday before suspension starts Sunday 16 November 2025.
  • Last week Melham became the second female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, watched by more than 2 million people, and attended by 286,746 at Flemington, according to Racing Victoria stewards.
