Shadow Fleet Tanker Reportedly Ablaze Near Russian Port City Sochi
Rescue teams are responding as authorities monitor air and water conditions and close nearby beaches after the tanker fire.
On Tuesday, an oil tanker burst into flames off the coast of Sochi in the Black Sea, creating dark smoke visible for miles; the vessel is believed to be the Liberian-flagged Aframax Rio.
The ship, sanctioned by Kyiv as part of the Russian shadow fleet, was reportedly hit by a Ukrainian drone while transporting crude oil from Novorossiysk to India.
A Sochi Telegram channel wrote, "A plume of smoke and numerous flashes of fire are visible for tens of kilometres," while local residents reported hearing no explosions, though a Russian military channel claimed "enemy strikes were not without effect."
Dmitry Plishkin, head of the Sirius federal territory, confirmed the fire as rescue operations began; Sirius beaches are temporarily closed while Roshydromet monitors water and air conditions.
This incident follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's recent announcement of new sanctions packages targeting critical components for Russian weapons production, consistent with Ukraine Kyiv's pattern of targeting shadow fleet vessels using drones during the war.
The residents of Sochi reported a fire on a ship in the Black Sea. "The fire is seen from all over the coast," said "Beware, the news" to a local resident.
