A reset in Kansas City: Andy Reid brings Chiefs rookies and QBs in early again after a 6-11 collapse
Reid gave quarterbacks and more than two dozen rookies early reps after Kansas City finished 6-11 and lost Patrick Mahomes to injury.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid brought his quarterbacks and rookies to Missouri Western State University early for a three-day crash course to reset following a dismal 6-11 season.
The Chiefs collapsed last season, finishing 6-11 while losing quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a major knee injury, prompting Reid to prioritize extra preparation for significant roster depth issues.
More than two dozen rookies are in camp, and Reid noted the extra sessions benefit quarterbacks and first-year players. The three-day crash course continued through heat indexes topping triple digits.
Quarterback Mahomes was cleared this past week to fully participate in training camp after knee surgery. The Chiefs acquired veteran backup Justin Fields to ensure stability should Mahomes be unable to start Week 1.
Kansas City will rely heavily on its rookie class, including defensive back Mansoor Delane and defensive tackle Peter Woods, who may play alongside Chris Jones. Pass rusher Mason Thomas must integrate quickly to address roster depth.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid had dispensed in the last few years from taking rookies and quarterbacks to Kansas City training camp a few days earlier, considering that such a veteran team, marching up to the Super Bowl, could do without it.
