Off-Duty Heroism: B.C. Nurse Honoured for Saving Friend's Life
Bystander CPR and AED use can raise cardiac arrest survival by 50 per cent, paramedics said as they recognized Lara Kesteloo.
- On Thursday, Saanich-based paramedics presented Lara Kesteloo with a BCEHS commendation and challenge coin for saving Skye Maynard, who collapsed from cardiac arrest in September 2024.
- During a lunchtime workout in Saanich, Kesteloo and Maynard were running when Maynard collapsed; Kesteloo directed a bystander to call 911 and performed chest compressions until paramedics used an AED to restart her heart.
- According to advanced care paramedic Noel Morton, bystander CPR and AED use can increase survival chance by 50 per cent, while a person's chance at surviving cardiac arrest drops about 10 per cent every minute.
- Veterans Memorial Lodge executive director Janet Power commended both nurses at the ceremony, telling them, "You're actually saving so many lives by saving each other," and praising their ongoing work within the care home.
- The Heart and Stroke foundation estimates 60,000 Canadians suffer cardiac arrest outside hospitals annually. Paramedics emphasize that learning CPR is a "selfless gift" that community members can provide to save lives anywhere.
