'A part of Butte’s history': Pekin Noodle Parlor closes its doors after 115 years
Owners cited changing economic conditions after the family-run restaurant served Butte for 115 years and earned a 2023 James Beard Award.
- After 115 years in business, the Pekin Noodle Parlor in Uptown Butte is closing, owners announced Thursday on Facebook, ending its run as a historic Chinese American establishment.
- Owner Jerry Tam cited "changing economic conditions" for the closure, noting that shifting consumer habits toward takeout made sustaining traditional restaurant operations increasingly difficult.
- Hum Yow and Tam Kwong Yee opened the parlor in 1911, and the James Beard Foundation later designated the restaurant one of "America's Classics" in 2023.
- On Friday, patrons visited the Uptown Butte location to observe the closure, while owners thanked the community for their "loyalty, your stories, your laughter, and your support through the decades."
- The Tam Family's deep roots in the American West and Butte's history ensure the parlor's legacy persists as a gathering place for generations of the community.
