Alexander H. Redfield, of Detroit, Michigan, was appointed United States agent for the Upper Missouri Indians in 1857. The Dakota Indians had no agencies at that time and were accustomed to meet the agent, who traveled by steamboat at some designated point on the river and receive the gifts and annuities sent to them by the “Great Father.”
