A man in Brazil turned his childhood dream into a small cinema for film lovers
Costa invested $18,600 to open a 35-seat independent cinema that offers unique films and creates a loyal community amid Brazil's multiplex-dominated market.
Costa opened Cine LT3, a 35-seat cinema in São Paulo, fulfilling a childhood dream fifty years in the making.
He credits a childhood filmgoing experience with inspiring his pursuit, saying films can transform people, and first entered a dark theater at age 6.
Using his savings and credit card, Costa spent about 100,000 reais renovating an old garage and installing vintage wooden seats from an old shuttered theater in the countryside.
Local regular Maída Alves, 63, frequent Cine LT3 and spoke with the AP after screenings, while visitors say independent theaters preserve the city's cultural memory and offer rare communal spaces.
Industry data show multiplex dominance and few small screening rooms; nearly 90% of Brazil's cinema screens operate inside shopping malls, with only 423 screening rooms in small theaters in 2024.
