A man from Kotka, Finland, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, whom he attacked with a knife and axe while she was sleeping and their teenage child was in the next room. The Kymenlaakso court ruled that the act was premeditated and particularly brutal, and also ordered him to pay 35,000 euros in compensation for mental anguish.

Mikko Haaksluoto, 52, from Kotka, had been planning the murder since at least the spring of 2026.
