Analysis: CNN, CBS News Oversight Board Will Be 'Toothless,' Experts Warn
Media experts say the board lacks clear enforcement power and could leave CNN and CBS News with little protection from ownership influence.
On Monday, David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, agreed to establish an editorial independence board for CNN and CBS News as part of his settlement with 12 states over the $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Prominent journalist Kara Swisher dismissed the board as a "fig leaf," as experts warn Ellison's promise of editorial independence for the news organizations is a "hollow one."
Board members will serve three-year terms protected by a "good cause" removal standard, yet the company retains exclusive authority to fill all vacancies and no provision requires findings be made public.
Legal experts, including media lawyer Seth Stern, warn of a "significant enforcement gap," while lawmakers remain concerned about Ellison's history of tailoring CBS News coverage to favor political interests.
Retired journalist Dan Gillmor argued that "genuine oversight" originates from owners themselves, and critics fear the board will be "toothless," similar to News Corp's 2007 committee overseeing the Wall Street Journal.
