A recent clinical study suggests that the use of probiotics may offer additional benefits to older adults undergoing treatment for depression. The research, conducted in India, reveals that modifying the gut microbiome with probiotics can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety in older adults. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, involved 58 adults over the age of 60 diagnosed with moderate depression.
Participants, all over 60 years of age and with moderate depression, continued with their standard attention and, in addition, took a probiotic supplement or placebo daily for 12 weeks.
