Man pleads not guilty in the hanging death of a Mississippi woman
Police said the investigation remains active and additional arrests are expected after a judge denied bond for the 51-year-old defendant.
- On Monday, Jarques Ratliff pleaded not guilty in Municipal Court to the murder of Tasia Fortune, who was found hanging in Jackson on Aug. 3.
- Ratliff was arrested Friday after the state medical examiner deemed the death a homicide; Fortune, a Kentucky native, had recently struggled with homelessness.
- Police Chief RaShall Brackney said Friday that Ratliff had an "association" with Fortune, but authorities have not provided a motive or indicated if race played a role.
- During the brief Monday hearing, the judge denied bond for Ratliff, and authorities indicated that additional arrests are expected in the investigation.
