A 7.0 earthquake hits China’s Tibet, killing 16 and injuring 32
Rescuers searched collapsed homes after the shallow quake, while officials said 339 houses fell and 11 of the 32 injured were seriously hurt.
On Oct. 22, 2026, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqing County, Tibet, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The region is seismically active due to collision between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which drives the uplift of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.
Xinhua reported that 339 houses collapsed, while the United States Geological Survey estimates that about 111,000 people were exposed to moderate to severe shaking.
Search and rescue efforts continue as teams provide assistance to the injured and build tents to house displaced residents.
This event marks the region's largest earthquake in recent years, following a magnitude 6.9 quake in April 2010 that killed more than 2,500 people.
In the strong earthquake of magnitude 7.0 that hit China's mountainous region of Tibet today in the city of Nagchu, 16 people were killed and at least 32 were injured, the media reported.
