Japan has issued a tsunami advisory after an earthquake near its outlying islands

  • A tsunami advisory has been issued for Japan's Izu Island chain following a 6.6 magnitude earthquake off Torishima island. The Japan Meteorological Agency initially predicted 1-meter tsunami waves, but only confirmed 30-centimeter waves in some areas.
  • The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and did not register 1 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7. Despite seismic activity in the region, no damage from the quake or tsunami has been confirmed so far.
  • The uninhabited island, located about 580 km south of Tokyo, could experience further quakes as seismic activity has continued since earlier this week. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged people to stay away from seashores until the advisory is lifted.
