Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick Bid Early Farewells at the British Open
Low scoring set the cut at 1 over, and 78 players advanced as Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose missed the weekend.
The 2026 British Open cut line at Royal Birkdale eliminated major contenders Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick on Friday, narrowing the field to 78 players at 1-over 141.
Rose shot a 76 in his opening round, while Fitzpatrick blamed links golf's unpredictability, saying "You need to have that rub of the green sometimes, and I didnt have it this week."
Walking the 18th hole Friday, Rose received warm spectator adulation while reflecting on his 1998 debut at Royal Birkdale, when he tied for fourth as a 17-year-old amateur.
U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, Cameron Smith, and 2017 Royal Birkdale winner Jordan Spieth also missed the cut, removing several major champions from weekend play.
Min Woo Lee and Josele Ballester made the cut with dramatic 18th-hole birdies, joining the 78 qualifiers competing Saturday and Sunday at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.
