At around 10:05pm on March 21, 1984, a Soviet nuclear attack submarine surfaced almost directly beneath an American supercarrier in the Sea of Japan. Kitty Hawk was steaming with 85 aircraft and eight escorts during Team Spirit '84. K-314 had been shadowing the group for days. Both vessels survived, and each side blamed the other.
