765 arrests for drink, drug driving over Christmas period
During a five-week operation, Garda arrested 765 drivers for intoxicated driving, with 56% involving alcohol and 44% drugs, amid 26 road fatalities and nearly 3,000 vehicle seizures.
- At a Dublin briefing, figures showed 765 arrests during Operation Limit for allegedly driving while intoxicated between 1 December and 5 January, Chief Superintendent David Harrington said.
- The crackdown came after a rise in road deaths, with Operation Limit mounted in response to increased road deaths and serious collisions to remove impaired drivers and shift social attitudes.
- The enforcement included almost 10,000 checkpoints, with mandatory breath tests, nearly 26,500 speeding detections, almost 1,700 fixed charge notices, and nearly 3,000 vehicles seized.
- The figures showed 26 road deaths and more than 70 serious crashes during the campaign period, and Chief Superintendent David Harrington urged communities to report intoxicated drivers, stressing `Never ever drive while intoxicated`.
- Garda noted drugs can still be detected up to four days and said enforcement will continue through 2026, linking offenders with partner agencies for dependency and support.
