Dozens of Birds Killed in Fire at New Hampshire Turkey Farm
Hurd Farm lost 75 live turkeys and most processed birds in a fire that destroyed all processing equipment days before Thanksgiving, impacting about a third of their annual income.
- On Nov. 18, a fire destroyed the Hurd Family Farm processing barn in Hampton, killing 75 live turkeys and destroying processed birds.
- Around 2:30 a.m., the fire started in an equipment shed where processing gear was kept, with callers reporting it around 2:35 a.m., and Hampton Fire Chief Michael McMahon said stored items helped fuel the blaze and the cause remains under investigation.
- Multiple departments responded but crews lacked local water and used tankers, and one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation; Steve Hurd said, `That burnt my livestock trailer there, which had about 150 birds on it. I lost half of them.`
- Facing lost equipment and birds, the farm is trying to find another facility to process its turkeys to fulfill roughly 550 sold, and Steve Hurd said, `We think we're going to have enough if we can get them processed`.
- The Hurd family posted to Facebook that they will communicate a recovery plan soon, with a GoFundMe raising $7,635 by 6 p.m. and insurance to help financially.
