Flights halted out of Newark and Philadelphia after air traffic equipment failure

  • The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop Monday at Newark Liberty International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Teterboro Airport due to an equipment outage at Philadelphia TRACON.
  • Air traffic controllers reported radio issues at Philadelphia TRACON, a Terminal Radar Approach Control facility that guides aircraft approaching and departing from the affected airports.
  • Outbound delays are currently between 46 and 60 minutes "and increasing," the FAA said, while arriving flights face delays of 15 minutes or less and Newark departures are delayed about 45 minutes.
  • Officials expect the ground stop to be lifted by 11:15 a.m., but there is a 30 to 60% chance the pause could be extended, creating uncertainty for travelers.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to release more information shortly, and travelers are urged to check with their airlines for individual flight status before heading to airports.
