5 children killed in a crash near Kitchener-Waterloo: OPP
Police said six others were hospitalized after the crash, and investigators are still determining what caused the collision.
On Friday evening, five children from Elmira, aged four to 12, died in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township.
Six individuals remain hospitalized with serious injuries, including both parents, a 15-month-old sibling, and the SUV driver, as police continue investigating the crash circumstances.
A family-led GoFundMe raised $77,000 of a $120,000 goal within 14 hours, with family member Nancy Doerksen stating, "My family is living through a tragedy that no one should ever have to face."
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed condolences, stating, "My thoughts are with the family and their loved ones as they face this horrific tragedy," while Mapleton Mayor Gregg Davidson pledged community support.
The Ontario Provincial Police recently launched a "Stop, Look, Live" safety campaign to educate drivers on intersection hazards; media relations officer Derek Rogers described the timing as a "tragic coincidence.
