New York AG and Lawmakers Propose Bills to Ban Algorithmic Pricing
The One Fair Price Package aims to ban discriminatory pricing using personal data, with a study showing 74% of grocery items priced variably, supporters say.
The 'One Fair Price Act' would ban surveillance pricing, preventing companies from using AI and algorithms to analyze browsing history, demographics, etc. to determine how much customers are willing to pay for products.
Attorney General James said: "Two neighbors can buy the same item at the same time but pay two different prices", referring to the practice as surveillance pricing or algorithmic pricing.
While some criticize the practice as unfair, Elizabeth Pancotti argued that "proposals like this threaten the very tools like targeted coupons and loyalty rewards that help families afford groceries and other basics.
