UK food price inflation to rise above 6% next year, industry says
The Food and Drink Federation said a £100 grocery shop could rise to £147.50 by July 2027 as drought, war and weather disruptions lift costs.
- On Wednesday, the Food and Drink Federation warned that food inflation will climb to nearly 4% by Christmas and peak at 6.4% in July 2027.
- FDF Chief Executive Karen Betts attributed price rises to geopolitical volatility and climate disruption, citing the Strait of Hormuz closure, extreme summer heat, and widespread droughts across the UK and Europe.
- A £100 weekly shop in 2020 is forecast to cost almost £150 by next summer, while manufacturers face rising input costs including wheat up 45% and cocoa up more than 100%.
- The FDF urged the government to ease cost pressures, warning that "resilience is wearing thin," while a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokeswoman said import tariffs are being suspended to support households.
- Last week, the National Audit Office warned the government must work more closely with industry to ensure supply chain stability against shocks including cyber-attacks and extreme weather events linked to El Nino.
