40-year-old wearing ‘old man’ mask charged in separate bank robberies
Investigators say David Sartin Jr. used a prosthetic mask and bicycle to rob 2 banks and told tellers not to include dye packs.
David Sartin Jr. of St. Petersburg was charged Monday with robbing two Florida banks using a prosthetic "old man" mask and a bicycle. The Attorney's Office in the Middle District alleged he robbed a Largo bank on Aug. 24 and a Petersburg bank on Sept. 15.
During both robberies, Sartin entered banks wearing the prosthetic mask with hat, glasses, and gloves, then demanded money while instructing tellers to exclude dye packs. He allegedly parked his vehicle nearby, switched to a bicycle to approach each branch, and fled before retrieving his car.
Investigators searching Sartin's storage unit found the prosthetic mask with grey facial hair, dark-framed glasses, and work gloves. They also discovered a journal dated Jan. 1, 2021, titled "God's Best friend is a Bank Robber! Uncle Henry Cops and Robbers the world through the eyes of a Bank Robber," written by Sartin.
Sartin faces up to 20 years in federal prison on each count. Prior convictions include a 2016 federal bank robbery in Texas and a 2008 attempted robbery using Halloween masks, making him a serial offender on supervised release when charged.
Video surveillance captured Sartin unloading a bicycle from his vehicle at his residence. Investigators later observed him spray-paint the car's white roof black the following day, apparently attempting to disguise the vehicle used in the heists.
In Florida, a man who previously served 10 years in prison for robbing a bank while disguised as an elderly man was arrested by federal authorities on suspicion of committing two more robberies using a similar disguise.
