4-Year-Old Girl Dies After Finding Gun in Closet at Harris County Home, Investigators Say
Investigators say the handgun belonged to the girl’s mother and was not secured, and charges remain possible as the case is reviewed.
On Thursday night, a 4-year-old girl died after accidentally shooting herself with a handgun found in a closet at a Harris County, Texas home; Harris County Precinct 4 deputies responded around 11 p.m.
The firearm belonged to the girl's mother, who stored it inside the closet; HCSO Sgt. stated, "It does not seem like the gun was secured," explaining how the child accessed the weapon.
Deputies are currently interviewing the mother and 10-year-old sibling who were home when the shooting occurred to reconstruct the events leading to the child's access to the firearm.
Investigators currently believe the shooting was accidental, though Brown noted that criminal charges against the mother are possible and she has not been taken into custody.
Following the girl's death on Thursday, the child was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved; authorities in Harris County are continuing their investigation into the incident.
