4 rescued on third day after Kenya building collapse as families lose hope
Rescuers pulled four survivors from the rubble as authorities said the missing count rose to 47 and the building lacked approval to operate shops.
On Friday, an 18-story building collapsed in a busy commercial street in Nairobi, Kenya, trapping construction workers and shopkeepers. Rescuers pulled two more survivors from the debris on Sunday, bringing the total rescued to four.
Authorities confirmed the structure lacked construction approval and a certificate of occupancy, while shops on basement and ground floors were illegally occupied. The building owner is deceased, with the property under joint ownership.
The Kenya Red Cross stated on Sunday that reports of missing persons have risen to 47. Survivor Onyango told journalists he saw light through the rubble Saturday, which helped rescuers locate and extract a trapped woman.
Peter Barasa, a relative of one of those trapped, told journalists he was losing hope of finding his loved one alive. Rescue operations entered a third night Sunday as families expressed diminishing optimism.
Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja called for stricter enforcement against building regulation flouters, describing current fines as a "slap in the wrist" for developers who endanger lives. The incident underscores accountability gaps in construction oversight.
