Russia Has Lost More Than 350,000 Soldiers
“About 352,000 Russian soldiers had died in the war against Ukraine through the end of 2025, according to a new estimate, underscoring the high cost that President Vladimir V. Putin is willing to bear to pursue his battlefield aims,” the New York Times reports.
At the beginning of May, a unit of the U.S.P.P.I. Madyar published its updated assessment of casualties among Russian military personnel, calculated by the Ukrainian side to have begun to exceed the rate of recruitment of volunteers into the Russian Armed Forces. For example, between December 2025 and April 2026, 148,400 volunteers were recruited into the Russian army and 156.7 thousand were killed and wounded during the same period.
The number of Russians who died during the Russian Federation's full-scale war against Ukraine reached 352,000 by the end of 2025, according to a joint study by the Russian independent publications Meduza and Mediazona.
