Quarterback Fernando Mendoza set a 95% completion record with five touchdowns, while backups contributed to a defense that limited Indiana State to just 10 first-half yards.
Indiana defeated Indiana State 73-0 at Memorial Stadium on Friday night, September 12, 2025, improving to 3-0 this season.
The Hoosiers' dominant performance followed Indiana State's strong 2-0 start, their first since 1986, though they were 50.5-point underdogs and struggled offensively.
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza completed 19 of 20 passes for 270 yards and five first-half touchdowns, while Omar Cooper Jr. caught 10 passes for 207 yards and four touchdowns.
Indiana's defense allowed only 77 yards, recorded 16 tackles for loss, no play over 15 yards, and preserved the program's largest shutout since 1901 by holding Indiana State scoreless.
Coach Curt Cignetti said, “We did tonight what we wanted to do,” as Indiana prepares for its Big Ten opener next week, which should provide a tougher test.
