3 off-duty Toronto police officers facing ‘serious’ charges in Spain
Toronto police said the officers were off duty and vacationing, and one suspect was later arrested in Palma de Mallorca.
On Monday, the Toronto Police Service confirmed three off-duty officers face charges in Barcelona following an alleged sexual assault over the weekend.
Europa Press reported authorities arrested the trio in the Ciutat Vella neighbourhood, where one officer allegedly hit the woman while another is accused of sexual assault without penetration.
One officer returned to Canada and was suspended from duty with pay, while the two others await suspension upon return; TPS spokesperson Stephanie Sayer called the allegations "serious."
Toronto Police Association spokesperson Meaghan Gray stated the association has "no further comment" given the off-duty nature of the charges, as cases are before the courts.
The TPS faced a difficult year, including a February corruption investigation involving ten current and former officers, plus recent calls for an "independent inspection" into antisemitism claims.
