More than 16,000 students nationwide earned semifinalist status, and about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth $24 million will be awarded next spring.

  • The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, representing the nation's highest-scoring high school seniors.
  • More than 1.2 million high school juniors entered by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, with selected semifinalists representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.
  • Semifinalists now compete for about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth a combined $24 million financed by corporations, businesses, colleges, and universities in spring 2027.
  • To advance to finalist standing, students must submit a detailed application documenting their academic record, leadership abilities, and honors; roughly 95 percent are expected to advance.
  • Established in 1955, the program recognizes academically talented students for success in rigorous college studies, with scholarship winners announced in four nationwide releases through July 2027.
