22 state AGs alert SEC of rating agencies’ ESG promotion
The coalition says the agencies used flawed climate assumptions and a retracted study, and it wants disclosures, reversals and methodology changes.
- Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen led a coalition of 22 state attorneys general in a letter to the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, criticizing how ratings agencies Moody's, Fitch, and S&P Global push ESG agendas.
- The attorneys general argued ESG-driven downgrades contravene stated methodologies and reveal undisclosed conflicts of interest, noting all three agencies pledged to a United Nations-backed group to incorporate ESG into credit ratings.
- In the letter, the coalition noted a report issued by Moody's in August 2026 relies on the implausible Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 climate scenario, citing a $41 trillion damage estimate from a retracted paper.
- American Energy Institute CEO Jason Isaac told The Center Square that agencies should "reflect financial reality, not an ESG agenda," urging the SEC to hold firms accountable to their methodologies and disclose conflicts.
- Neither Moody's, Fitch, nor S&P have responded to requests for comment regarding the latest letter, which follows a separate demand from 23 attorneys general in April for explanations of fossil-fuel downgrades.
