Learjet may have been breaking up before it crashed in Florida, NTSB says

Investigators said the jet may have shed parts in flight as turbulence and ice preceded a rapid descent that killed all nine aboard.

  • A Learjet crashed into a Florida roadway on Sunday, killing all nine people aboard, the National Transportation Safety Board said on Monday. The NTSB indicated the aircraft may have been breaking up before impact.
  • According to LiveATC recordings, the pilot reported ice accumulating at 35,000 feet and moderate turbulence before declaring an emergency. The aircraft descended rapidly, with the pilot radioing, "We're descending 8,000 — mayday, mayday — we're descending 10,000 feet per minute."
  • "We do have some indication that the aircraft was breaking up before impact," National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said Monday. Investigators may find parts of the plane some distance away from the primary crash site.
  • Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel G. Flores said the county "doesn't have a clue" when residents can return home after evacuating around 77 mobile homes. "Our concern right now is clearing the scene so that our residents can get back to normal," Flores said.
  • Authorities have not identified those killed or released the cause of the crash. The Bahamas-bound jet departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office declining to discuss the death investigation as it remains in early stages.
