2026 Election: California Ballot Measure Guide
The guide highlights record campaign spending, a proposed billionaire tax and a Trump administration lawsuit challenging up to 20,000 mail ballots.
On November 3, California's 23 million registered voters will decide the state's next leader, determine which party controls Congress, and vote on 14 ballot propositions, including a proposed billionaire tax.
President Donald Trump's administration has contested California's election mechanics for months, suing to set aside up to 20,000 ballots allegedly mailed to noncitizens after earlier executive orders restricting mail-in voting failed in court.
Democrat Xavier Becerra faces Republican Steve Hilton in the gubernatorial race, while state Sen. Ben Allen and former San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim compete for insurance commissioner, with political action committees spending more than $6 million on the race.
Election Night results will signal which party controls Congress for the Trump administration's final two years, though county officials have 30 days to count ballots and the secretary of state has 38 days to certify results.
California Secretary of State Shirley Weber noted that more than 89% of primary voters used mail-in ballots, while an October poll found 65% of likely voters prefer mailing ballots compared to 11% planning to vote in person.
