12 Beagles Recovering in U.P. After Released From Wisconsin Research Facility

The facility will sell 1,500 dogs as rescues and foster families take in the first 20 beagles and more arrivals this week.

  • On Monday, the Wisconsin Humane Society began receiving beagles from Ridglan Farms after the research facility decided to sell 1,500 dogs, with 150 expected throughout Wisconsin.
  • Ridglan Farms, a breeding facility in Blue Mounds, surrendered its state breeding license last fall to avoid prosecution on mistreatment charges, prompting the decision to sell the dogs.
  • Corey Viars, a media specialist with the Wisconsin Humane Society Green Bay, noted the dogs have had little exposure to everyday life. "They grew up, they never really got to go on walks," Viars said.
  • The humane society will pick up 90 additional beagles from Dane County on Tuesday and Wednesday, with 65 going to Milwaukee and 25 to Green Bay for medical clearance and training.
  • Of the 1,500 total beagles, 500 will remain in Wisconsin, and the organization is requesting donations of soft dog treats and canned food to support the newcomers' transition to permanent homes.
