2 washed into ocean in Big Sur, 1 still missing

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a search is now a recovery mission after a man went missing amid hazardous ocean conditions with waves up to 18 feet.

  • On Saturday, three people were swept into the ocean near Soberanes Point in Big Sur, California, when a party of four adults was caught in the incident, Monterey County Sheriff's Office said.
  • The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Statement warning sneaker waves and rip currents, with breaking waves of 13 to 18 feet expected through Monday due to a long northwesterly swell.
  • A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter reported seeing a body about 100 meters offshore around 4:24 but lost visual due to high surf, after authorities responded to a call just after 3:00 p.m., involving multiple agencies including sheriff's search-and-rescue and CalFire.
  • Monterey County Sheriff's Office said two women reached shore and were taken to a hospital, while the missing man, wearing a white turban and black clothing, remains unlocated.
  • Officials note sneaker waves can run far up beaches and over rocks, with beach hazard statements issued over recent weeks, after a second incident at Garrapata State Park following a fatality involving a father and 7-year-old daughter.
