2 People Escape Injury After b.c. Float Plane Crash
FALSE BAY, WEST SIDE OF LASQUETI ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 18 – Two people escaped unharmed after their float plane overturned during a routine weekly delivery flight, with local civilians and rescue crews responding quickly, officials said.
- Early Thursday morning, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria received a call just after 9 a.m. that a float plane had overturned, and two people were safely rescued in False Bay.
- Al Bajec said the float plane arrives every Thursday to drop off workers on Lasqueti Island, while on this flight it appeared to be coming in at a lower angle than usual.
- Pedram Mohyeddin said civilians had already rescued the two occupants and brought them to Parksville on a coast guard boat, and Al Bajec used his boat to pull the upside-down plane to the dock.
- Two vessels, RCMSAR 59 from Deep Bay and a Canadian Coast Guard Motor Life Boat from Parksville, were deployed to assist, and a Cormorant helicopter from Comox was also dispatched.
- The Transportation Safety Board of Canada confirmed it had been notified but hasn’t decided on a full probe, and `We are investigating the incident`, Telus spokesperson Kalene DeBaeremaeker said.
