2 Montreal police officers suspended for alleged abuse of power, including urinating on homeless person
The force said its Professional Standards Division is investigating after a report alleged abuse by two officers and complaints from colleagues.
On Friday, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal suspended two officers from Station 21 following allegations one urinated on a person experiencing homelessness and another mocked a suspect in a humiliating position.
A La Presse report published Friday detailed the alleged misconduct, prompting colleagues who were disgusted by the incidents to report the behaviour to superiors.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada condemned the allegations as "very serious," while Annie Savage, executive director of RAPSIM, called them "degrading" and "violent," citing what she regularly hears from unhoused residents.
The SPVM's Professional Standards Division is currently investigating the matter, with officials stating they are "determined to get to the bottom of things," though neither officer has been charged with any offence.
These suspensions follow the dismantling of a 16-member patrol unit months earlier due to separate misconduct allegations. Last June, RAPSIM reported that 40 per cent of unhoused individuals in Montreal feel targeted by police, indicating systemic tensions.
