2 killed after U.S.-registered private jet crashes in Dominican Republic
The jet declared an emergency shortly after takeoff, and investigators are probing the cause after both U.S. crew members died.
A private plane crashed Sunday near La Romana in the Dominican Republic, killing the pilot and co-pilot, both U.S. citizens, according to the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation.
The aircraft had departed Puerto Rico and refueled in the Dominican Republic before heading to Texas to retrieve former MLB legend Yadier Molina, a Puerto Rican catcher who spent 19 years with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Shortly after takeoff from the Dominican Republic, the pilot and co-pilot reported an emergency and attempted to return to the airport, though the cause of the crash remains unknown.
Dominican agencies launched an investigation into the incident while the two crew members remained unidentified; the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation confirmed both were U.S. citizens.
Authorities continue investigating as the cause of the crash remains undetermined. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
